VENEER LOGS
DEFECT DESCRIPTIONS
3" - 4" Sound knot - One defect.
Larger
sound knots - One or more defects depending on log size and quality.
Other
knots will be graded as they affect the quality of the log.
A three foot tight seam is acceptable.
Slight raised curl - Two defects.
Burls,
swells, cat faces, dote, checking, shake, curl, worm track, mineral,
grubs and spiral
grain
are defects
and will be graded as they
affect the value of the log.
Two defects in a straight line will be graded as one defect.
Rot or hole over 3" in diameter is unacceptable.
End
defects
must be well centered. A small amount of off center rot is acceptable
in
grades below select
and will
be graded as it affects the value of the log.
Sweep
- In logs 12" to 14" in diameter - 1 1/2" of sweep will be allowed. In
logs
15" and over - 3" of sweep is
acceptable.
Necessary scale deductions will be made for
sweep.
Length
- Logs not meeting specified lengths will be cut back to the the
next acceptable
length.
Length
Measurement - The length of logs will
be
measured from the top of the scarf.
Logs
will be scaled with the Maine Log Rule applied to the minimum top
diameter.
Final Scale
- The decision of the receiving scaler will be final; however, logs
field scaled,
the field scale will be honored.
Logs not
meeting the within specifiactions will be culled. Cull logs must
be removed
from the mill yard withing 10
days, otherwise the mill will dispose of them without recourse.
Proper
scale deductions will be made for sweep.
Logs
received and scaled at the mill by Friday 4 pm, payment will be mailed
Tuesday.
Logs scaled Saturday will be paid
the following week.

not delivered logs to Columbia for several months, check with the
contact
people for up to date species,
grades and prices.
